Strength in Depth (and a Submerged Landing Stage)
Norwich delivered one of those classic head race days: cold hands, tidal water, a landing stage doing its best impression of Atlantis and a Rob Roy squad that looked completely at home in it.
For many of our juniors it was their first time racing on a tidal river. Add shifting rhythm, unfamiliar water movement and a start line that always feels slightly louder than it needs to be, and you’ve got a proper test.
They passed it.
Across all three divisions the results tell their own story. Crews were not just winning categories — they were sitting seconds apart in raw speed order. In several cases, the only people denying Rob Roy pots were… other Rob Roy crews.

Times were tight. Execution mattered.
And the squad delivered.
Racing the Double
Evie, who usually races a single, stepped into a double with Maya and brought home a win. We asked her what changes when you’re not alone in the boat.
“I think it’s always difficult to give up control in a new boat. The rhythm is always different, there is always a new combination to work on. But confidence in a new boat can make all the difference.”
In a single, every mistake is yours. In a double, that pressure shifts.
“You don’t want to mess up the flow of the boat or do the wrong thing which can affect your crew mate. Everyone is learning though, so I try not to let those thoughts get to me.”
Pain hits differently too.
“In a single, when it starts to hurt, you know you could just quit right there. In a bigger boat, you know someone else is in the same amount of pain as you are — and you need to keep pushing for them. As a team.”
Trust becomes the defining skill.
“Maya is my closest friend and I have known her for years. I trust her with my life. Trusting someone with the boat’s rhythm and rate is the biggest thing. When you click together it makes a race way more enjoyable.”
But ask her what she’d choose tomorrow?
“I would race a single. It’s all on you. If you fail, you know it’s you who needs to improve — and when you win, it’s great to see the result of the effort you’ve put in. I have a love–hate relationship with my single, but at the end of the day I really enjoy it.”
Off the Water
The new Rob Roy gazebo proved its worth immediately, keeping athletes and kit dry while the river crept up around the landing stage.
The Supporters’ Squad once again turned a race into a proper squad day out with pasta, hot drinks and enough cake to refuel a small army. In cold conditions, that matters more than people realise.
And perhaps most importantly: it was a good-mood day. Calm athletes. Focused racing. Smiles at the finish.
Preparation, trust and squad culture is why the results look the way they do.
Huge thanks to Simon and Sarah for coordinating the racing, and to every supporter who helped make the day run smoothly.
On to the next one – 25 boats going to Denver for Head of the East!
Jo's thoughts and full results
It looks as though most people won their category unless they were beaten by another RRBC squad member (which is nothing to be ashamed of!!!).
Here are the results – they’re a bit difficult to work through as the organisers haven’t sorted them into categories. I’ve left the results in speed order as they show just how close all our crews were – fantastic strength in depth!
