Sudbury Regatta – August 09
Angus Mcluskie won his first race competing in the J11 1x event at Sudbury Regatta this August. He was drawn in a straight final against a Sudbury sculler and after pulling back the stagger at the start and take the notorious Sudbury bend well, he pulled clear down the final straight winning by a good 4 lengths.
Well done Angus the first of many we hope.
Coupe de la Jeunesse – July 2009
Hugh Anderson, part of the WCS team, has spent since October trialling in hope of racing for his country. After a year and a half of hard training in his single, and a not very promising result in the first set of trials, Hugh took part in bumps last year and found he was a sweep oarsman rather than a sculler. After training with pairs partner James Powell, who rows for Bedford Modern School, the pair came 12th in the second set of trials. Invited to the spring assessments, Hugh finished in twelth place on strokeside. Despite a weaker performance then the previous trials, the pair made it to finals, which meant time for seat racing with Hugh finishing in the middle of the group winning himself a place in the 8 and coxed 4 on the Coupe team.
After intense training, including 38k paddles, Hugh got two gold medals on the first day of racing, one in the 4+ and one in the 8+, and a bronze medal in the 4+ on the second day along with another gold in the 8+.
Well done Hugh, a brilliant result!
St Neots Regatta – 25/26 July

The Women’s J17 singles event saw another Robs show down between usual doubles partners Meadows and Drury with Meadows taking it by a canvas.
Giles had a second chance of losing his novice status in the singles event with another all Robs final, this time against Phil “Chicken” Congdon. Giles took the race by a length although regretting it half an hour later as he was thrown in the river!!

Another brilliant weekend for the club! Well done everyone.

2008-09 Head Season
Bedford SBH – 5 April
or once Bedford head didn’t result in hypothermia and no one was seen shovelling snow out of boats. Instead we had the perfect day for rowing with almost clear blue skies and although the wind varied a little throughout the day it was never like hitting a concrete wall (except when we were struggling with the steering). It was great so see so many Robs rowers and maroon kit everywhere. With 8 divisions it was a long but very successful day with wins by several Robs rowers and good promising performances from the rest.
Also, not only was Rebecca Caroe there all day coaching, and as an invaluable support to us all but she also managed sneak in a race and picked up yet another pot in the Women’s Vet C 2X in a composite Robs/Cantabs crew.
Women’s Squad
The women’s squad was represented by Lindsay, Angie, Anna-Rosa and Bronwen. In a borrowed Bedford boat with no speakers this crew, coxed by Aimee, still managed to come 3rd in the intermediate 3 category only missing out with 6 sec. Lindsay won her first pot in the WN 1X with a very convincing performance. Lindsay and Anna-Rosa raced twice in the double scull in the novice and the intermediate 3 category and came 3rd overall in both races despite having crashed in the first race and having to wait for a boat to pass before carrying on. Anna-Rosa and Angie also raced in the WN 1X

WEHORR – 7 March
Good conditions very similar to 2008 saw one Robs boat take to the water from Putney trying to defend starting position 45. The Robs WS3 8 was coxed by Fiona Knights and the crew consisted of Sam Bennet (stroke), Katherine Webster, Angie Mcconnel, Lindsay Hamilton, Anna-Rosa Gejlsbjerg, Bronwen Richards, Tanja van Riesen and Sally Dowding.
Although the chasing elite crew from Bessel-RC eV Minden quickly caught up with Robs from the start, Robs put in a strong performance in a side by side race and manage to hold them off with hard rowing and a perfectly coxed line. In the last bit of the race Robs dug really deep and pulled out some grrrrr…. rowing seeing the overall position change from Hammersmith catching up 18 positions on the last bit of the race including the 99’s A S2 boat which was ahead by 0.27 seconds by Hammersmith but was beaten by the finishing line with 0.48 seconds. The final time was 21:03.02 (position 87) and the Robs boat came in as the third highest ranking Cambridge crew after the City A S2 boat and the composite Cambridge Vet C boat.

Norwich Head – 23 February
As part of the preparation for WEHORR the WS3 8 went to Norwich. The warm weather took everyone by surprise and the general kit stripping off during the long waiting before the start contributed to making friends with several boats. The 8 raced in division 2 (long course) and put in a solid performance with a final time of 16:03 beating the only other WS3 8 from East Anglia University with just over a minute. Enya and Charlotte didn’t have any competition in WJ16 2X in division 1 (long course) but raced extremely well and beat many other crew. They both repeated the success in division 2 in the singles with Charlotte winning the WJ15 1X (short course) and Enya only missing out on a win by 0.21 second in W16 1X (long course)

The scratch eight came 3rd overall with a time of 6:19, beaten by 99s (6:18) and Downing (6:08). Given that the crew was assembled on the day, this is a good result, and something to build on!
Grip and Shep beasted it in the 2- for a time of 8:08.
Angie’s quad pulled the course with a time of 8:10.
Guy rowed in the single for a time of 8:12.
Finally, and most importantly, Rasmus had his first race in the J13 category – the youngest competitor on the day. Rasmus rowed the course in his single in 10 minutes and 33 seconds in challenging weather conditions. Furthermore, he beat: 3 eights, two 4s and a mixed double; which is excellent!
2007-08 Head Season
Peterborough Head of the Nene – 2 February
Peterborough reverted to type for this year’s race, with a biting cold head wind for all three divisions despite some sunshine.
Despite the conditions, Robs again put out a number of strong crews, and came home with some tankards to prove it.
Division 1
In the first division, the small boats raced over 2.5km, and the World Class Start boys showed their potential with the double coming 7th overall in their first ever race and against some very strong competition.
Oli Campbell won Novice Sculls, Grip and Shep “won” Elite Pairs (ok there may not have been any opposition, but a win is a win, right?!) and Colin Leonard just missed out on the S3 sculls pot. Rebecca Caroe won S2 Doubles in a composite with Cantabs’ Susanna Holt. The women’s development squad also put out a double and two singles, putting down some good markers which they will be aiming to improve on in the coming months.
Division 2
Again over 2.5km, the second division for 4’s and Quads was won comfortably overall by a Rob Roy/Peterborough/St Neots composite S2 quad with Oli Campbell in it – the next fastest crew was 19seconds back!
Also competing was a Men’s S4 4+ of Gripper, Brett Saunders, Chris Dale and David Latham, who were 2nd in their category.
Division 3
The last division, this time over 5km, was for the 8’s. First off for Robs was the Men’s squad 8. A solid but not sparkling row led to 2nd in S2, and 9th place overall.
The Robs/X-Press/Leicester composite was also 2nd in Women’s S2. Finally the Women’s Development Squad put in a solid row in a composite with Cantabs in Women’s S3, finishing in 23.15.

Robs ‘Boxing Day’ Races – 31 December
Crew 2 – Stephen, Tom Davies (President), Claire Allen, Dave – stroke.
Crew 3 – Lance, Dave, Nicholas and Gripper (bow). Note Lance’s silly hat and his odd west-country accent that he has strengthened having seen his Mother over Christmas!
The Mass start. Crew 1 (Enya, Susanna, Katherine and Melissa) lead off from Emmanuel Footbridge followed 2 lengths by Crew 2 and 1 length behind by Gripper’s Crew 3. However, Grip can’t count one length so they were actually only a few feet apart at the start (sour grapes…?)
The girls lead off the start…. holding their distance over crew 2 for about half the 600m distance…
Crew 2 closes on the girls…. Melissa takes the inside line around the bend and Stephen is warned by Shep the start marshall, umpire and chief cheater from his bike on the bank to go wide….
Meanwhile at the back of the pack, Grippers crew have recovered from a slight crustacean incident and work hard to regain territory.
The “bumping” finish, as Stephen manfully avoids hitting the girls while Gripper closes fast….. and off to the right is Karthick Tadinada hiding under a willow tree in his single hoping not to get hit! Curly Galbraith the finish umpire with his dogs declared the girls the winners….. biased, of course.
And so we all ended up sitting outside the Old Spring waiting for it to open at midday.
[Note: traditionally these are married vs singles races but that would have been a walkover!]
Xmas Head – 15 December
- Men’s 8+ – overall winner in 6.58
- Mixed 8+ – winner of mixed 8+ in 7.57
- Men’s S1 1x – Gripper fastest single sculler in 7.58
- Men’s S1 2- – Gripper and Shep fastest pair in 8.28
- Women’s S1 2- – fastest women’s pair in 9.47
- Junior 15 1x – Parkhouse fastest junior in 10.07
Reports
The Men’s 8+ used the race as a training piece, rate-capping it to 28 as far as Downing Boathouse, and then winding it up 1 for each boathouse to the finish. This wasn’t entirely successful, but they still managed to beat City into 2nd place by 3 seconds. All in all a useful start to the racing season for the Men’s 8+ squad, and a nice shield to add to the collection.
The Mixed 8+ put in a strong performance to win the Mixed 8+’s event, despite being in rather fine fancy dress.
Grip and Shep’s pair had some issues with slower crews, being forced to stop at one point past the boathouses due to some 3-abreast carnage ahead.

Not a great scull. We worked against each other for most of the race, unable to reproduce our good form from our practice outings. On the plus side, second place wasn’t that far in front of us. A crab from me with a minute to go will not have affected our overall position. (JPD)
